lab puppy training secrets
Petra S asked:
I have a 7 month old lab mix and she is mean and aggressive and I don’t think she means to be. I have a 2 year old full lab and the puppy is always attacking her and she even got the other labs collar stuck in her mouth and almost choked my older lab. I never had this problem with my oldest lab when she was around other dogs as a puppy. Is there something I can do? I am at my wits end.

Your puppy is fighting to be the Alpha dog.
There are exercises that you can do with her to help teach her she is not the alpha in the home.

One of the exercises I had to do with my yellow lab was this.
Have her role on her back, start gently rubbing her stomach, as she relaxes, apply pressure to her upper body, forcing her to be held down. when she tries to get up, start rubbing her stomach again…then go back into applying pressure, this will teach her that YOU are the alpha in the house.

Maybe she wants to be the alpha… I would suggest playing with all your dogs and the same time and take them ffor walks all at the same time and whenever she gets impertinent like that you should say no! make her sit and if she doesn’t lister jerk her leash once. You shoudln’t leave them together alone, you need to re-introduce her to the other dogs little by little until she gets used to it. Hope this helps, if not try to talk to an expert.

I have a lab mix also. She is 1 1/2 years old. I think it just takes time. She is starting to behave a little better, but never responded to any of our disciplinary measures. She never got a collar stuck in her mouth, but she did remove our other dog’s collar on a regular basis. GOOD LUCK!!

P.S.–She’s still not completely potty trained!

the only thing i can think of is try OBEDIENCE training….when you train your dog be firm and tell her that you are charge and that there is no reason to be mean….

She should have been taught what was allowed and what was not allowed when a puppy–you will prob need a trainer to get her straighten out at 7 mo. old–biting and putting feet on people are never to be tolerated!
