How do you stop a puppy from becoming aggressive?

lab puppy training secrets
Andrea asked:

My puppy is 10 weeks old and she is starting to get aggressive. If things don’t go her way (we take her inside, we hold her mouth to stop her from playfully biting us, we get mad at her for going to the bathroom on the floor, etc.), she will growl and bite us HARD. I don’t know how to stop this behaviour, any tips would be great, thanks.

Here is a video that will help with dog aggression

Put Tabasco sauce on your hand, and then bring her in, and when she bites you, it will surprise her. It won’t hurt her, but don’t put too much on, just enough to startle her. It should work.

Treat the pup as the mother would have. Grab the pup by the scruff and give her a stiff shake. Now that I’ve said that, let me clarify…

Firmly yet gently grab the puppy by the scruff and without removing the paws from the ground shake the pup back and forth once or twice no more than about 8 inches in either direction. The point is not to make the puppy yelp, hurt, or be terrified. The point is to assert dominance and scold the way the puppy is used to being scolded. Obviously this becomes ineffective after around the 3rd or 4th month of age because the pup’s been away from the mother.
Don’t hold a puppy’s mouth shut because in doing so you put pressure on the nasal cavity and make it so the puppy can’t breathe. I’m sure you didn’t know the pup was suffocating but that’s a good reason the pup would want to bite you afterwards! Firm “NO!”s and shakes will get the puppies attention and they will understand. Make sure when you yell no that it sounds like a sharp bark a mom dog would make.

Chances are, your puppy thinks you may be playing with her. A 10 week old puppy is very young, and that is the fear-imprint months for your puppy. Anything that happens too drastic will stay with her for a long time.

The biting comes from your puppy teething. They do not know any better and feel the need to bite on everything and anything! It is important to get your puppy proper chew toys. Try putting peanut butter on your hand so that she will lick it. She will eventually associate your hand with licking.

Be patient with her when you are house training your puppy. They do not know. I would suggest crating your puppy. Get a crate just big enough for her to turn around. No dog wants to lay where they urinate and she will most likely bark and want to get out. You need to take them out a lot..after feeding, playing, napping, greeting.

Exercise your dog. This is a great way to bond with her and she will know that you are boss. When she goes to bite you, shove a toy in her mouth and let her know that you are the pack leader.

Also, after she receives all of her puppy shots, take her to training classes so she will be trained to obey you.

It is a lot of work but in the end, it’s worth it.

Goodluck :D

holding her mouth shut will never work. If she hurts you, YELP loudly like her littermates would then walk away and ignore her for a minute. Every single time she does something “bad’. take away your attention.

Also, socializing her with other dogs will teach her manners.

Make sure she had a million chewy toys, like kongs and orbee balls…she needs to bite something!

As for accidents in the house, puppies have small bladders, they need to go out every few hours. Punishing her after the fact teaches her nothing, you have to correct her withing one second!! If she starts to *** or **** in front of you, lift her **** up and it will interrupt her. Take her immediately outside and praise her like CRAZY when she goes on the lawn. Put a word to the action (ie go pee)

If she goes inside anmd you don’t catch her in the act, you’re out of luck. Any accidents your dog has are your fault, not hers. Time, patience and understanding a dogs brain will get her trained in no time!!

Stop being aggressive with your puppy – or give her to someone who knows better than to get ‘mad’ at a 10 week old pup for going to the bathroom on the floor, hold her mouth closed for playing, etc.

When she bites, grab her by the muzzle and force her gums into her teeth. Make sure you do it hard enough for her to get the point but not so hard that she is going to bleed. If she tries to bite you after you let go, repeat. Also make sure you are using a firm voice, and not giving her treats after she does something wrong. If you have a crate, use it as a timeout. Maybe 15 minutes or so. Also make sure you socialize her with other people and animals. Good Luck!

You are going the wrong way about it. you are using strength to stop her so she is using all her strength to stop you. its fair enough really.

The best thing to do to stop nipping and mouthing is to let out a puppy like yelp, this immediately makes the puppy back away as it is what her litter mates would do. Its a way to let them know that it hurts. They won’t understand all the no’s and putting them in another room etc. When they nip, you yelp then turn your back on them (get visitors to do the same) they will soon get the message of ‘ouch that hurts and i am not playing because of it’ Try this link for a full guide.

You should also teach your puppy the ‘leave it’ command this is not only for objects but also helps them control their bite inhibition (become more aware of how people like to be interacted with). This will show you how (its really easy)

Hope this helps :D
