Is my 10 week old lab puppy abnormally aggressive?
Abby asked:
I have an 10 week old chocolate lab puppy. She is very loving and acts like a normal puppy except sometimes she gets this wild streak and runs directly at me and starts growling and biting at me in a very aggressive way. Is this somewhat normal puppy behavior? Usually I try to grab her collar and hold her down until she submits but she usually gets right back up after I let her go and is at it again. Any help???

try being a little more firm. when you grab her colar it might make her a little bit angry. After words just turn your back to her and ignore her for a while. Or go in a different room and don’t let her come in. Putting her in a kennel for aout 10 minutes might help to.
Not unusual behavior between puppies. Not appropriate with humans or with other dogs. When our puppy gets like this all play stops, I leash and sit her until she calms down. If you force the dog in an “alpha roll” rather than request she get herself under control with a sit, then she will repeat the behavior.
I have had two Chocolate Labs, they need lots of walking and fetch to keep them tired or they will drive you crazy. They will chew everything, have a fondness for socks, underwear and remotes.
Your puppy needs a 15 or 20 minute walk three times a day to nip this behavior in the bud.
tell her NO and get up when she jumps turn away when she growls walk away when she nips tell her NO and walk away. ignore her until she calms down. its not abnormal it is normal she is just being hyper theirs a difference between playful growls and aggressive ones
It sounds pretty normal, since when she is held down on her back she submits. She is probably just trying to establish that she is the dominant one in the relationship which you must let her know she is NOT! But she may also think this is a game you are both playing so be sure not to give in to it like that at all. When she tries it, turn your back on her or leave the room. She may just need a little more exercise as well. Or in a worst case scenario you should check with your vet about what to do since we did have one of our dogs that actually was mentally disturbed I’d guess you’d say and became extremely aggressive despite our efforts. You can also withhold her food my vet was explaining to me for aggressive dogs and then when it’s dinner time make sure you are the one that “pretends” to eat first (like in a pack) and then you “allow” her to have the remaining food after you pretend you are done. So basically imitate the pack and make sure she sees you as the alpha dog. Other than that it sounds like you are doing well with her. Good luck! Signed, a fellow dog lover!
I just got a boxer he is 13 weeks. He does it too runs and jumps and bites my arm or legs and growls. Its normal thats how they play with there sibblings. Just make a high pitched yip. thats what there mommy does!
Reward her when she is good. You should be firm with her when she is aggressive. Tell her “no” very firmly while you hold her down. Ignore her for a little and she will learn that that behavior isn’t allowed and won’t get her attention. And when she calms down be sure to love and reward her so she’ll want to be good more than aggressive.
