R M asked: My neighbor works at night and sleeps during day time. The complain is that my dog barks during day time disrupting her sleep. I already received a warning from the city. Due to this I have bought a spray no bark collar for the dog to reduce the barking.

A blonde and her husband are lying in bed listening to the next door neighbor’s dog. The dog has been in the backyard barking for hours and hours. The blonde jumps up out of bed and says, ‘I’ve had enough of this.’

She goes downstairs. The blonde finally comes back up to bed and her husband says, ‘The dog is still barking, what have you been doing?’

The blonde says, ‘I’ve put the dog in our backyard, let’s see how they like it.’

We bought one of those collars that shocks the dog when she barks. I think you said you got one? It was sad to make her wear, but it worked. It’s better than having her put down because of barking.

Tell your neighboor you bought the collar and are trying to ease the barking. Just make sure he/she knows you’re TRYING and not just ignoring him/her.

well where i live (im not sure about u), dogs r allowed to bark from 8 in the morning to 8 at night. before or after those hours ur dog cant be barking while outside because people r sleeping. ur dog probably has the right to bark during the day. its not ur fault that ur neighbor has a job where they work at night. explain that to them. dogs bark. its what they dog. and ur neighbor needs to understand that and buy some damn earplugs

a collar? why don’t you try to remedy the problem,, dogs simply do not just bark,, they bark from excitement, boredom, neglect.. etc.. why is your dog barking all day…. what a nuisance

It is very good that y ou have bought a no bark collar, but if he is still barking take my advise.

You could train him to bark when you say to and to be quiet when you say to.

If he is a guard dog than he is meant to bark.

If he is an indoor dog than you could just keep him inside most of the time.

Well I Hope This Helps, Good Luck!!!!

Your dog is lonely. If you occupy him she wont be barking. She is looking for some attention. Save your pup from being put to sleep.

Tell your neighbor 2 sleep during the night and work during the day like a regular person. If he doesn’t want 2 then maybe tell your dog 2 shut up or something, or tell ur neighbor 2 move somewhere else. all I can tell u.

Bring your dog inside if it is outside. Otherwise, the bark collar should work.

Figure out why your dog is barking. Is it boredom, anxiety?

Make sure he has plenty of toys to keep him occupied. If he is inside, turn on a radio or leave the TV on to create background noise. It will help mask other outside noises that may be startling the dog.

Most importantly, do not allow the dog to bark uncontrollably when you are home.

Train him.

Apologize to the neighbors and explain what you are doing.

A barking dog is no different than any other noise problem.

Put collar on neighbor

Keep the dog inside. It’s much less likely to bark. Especially if you crate it.

I totally sympathize with the neighbour. When my husband worked nights our neighbours dog used to bark all day. She made no attempt to stop it unlike you though. In the end Animal control took the dog away. If you’re trying to rectify the situation though I’m sure they will give you a little more time to work on it.

I’m glad you are trying to put things right. Some people just don;t understand that a dog barking all day for a night worker is like one barking all night for others. Many places have a clause in the by-law when there is a night worker in the area that you can be get a fine or worse for a dog barking in the day. In fact many places you can be fined even if there is no night worker if the dog barks all day.

Dont take it to the backyard and just leave it in the house during day time and at night take it out.

I would suggest going round to speak to your neighbour. Apologise about the problem and explain what you are doing to try and stop this to them.

Make sure you enrol your dog in a training class, and mention this to your neighbour. This way it shows you are trying to sort it :)

this an unfortunate situation to be in considering you’ve already received a warning from the city, its a shame your neighbour didn’t come and speak to you first! Saying that, theres not an awful lot you can do to stop a dog from barking when you’re out – its only protecting your property whilst you’re away!!! I’d suggest having a chat with the neighbour to explain that although he/she works unfortunate hours, you can’t really stop your dog from doing its job. Explain to this person that while your dog is barking, its deterring intruders and burglars and so ultimately is protecting THEIR property! Offer a hand in friendship ( trust me it helps a lot in these situations ) and apologise and offer to buy them some good earplugs and assure them you will do all in your power to try and lessen the noise ( can you put your dog in another room away from the neighbours wall during the day? ) or ask a friend or family member to come in for an hour or so or to take the dog out whilst you are away? Its an awkward one i grant you and i wish you luck.

Is your dog inside the house if not maybe you could fix it a safe room inside the house this way the barking will not be as loud and if he is missing people try leaving a tv or radio on he will think someone is home and hes not alone

Daisy S @ 9:31 pm #

theres nothing else you can do accept for go round and have a chat to your neighbour why should your dog be silenced just because of his work/sleep circumstances its not your problem. I wouldnt stand for it id tell him to get lost.

missl @ 10:24 pm #

That’s unfortunate, as it appears to me that the dog has separation anxiety. That’s very difficult to overcome, I would suggest an animal behavior specialist for something like that.

If the dog is bored, you can buy doggie videos because some dogs actually watch TV(mine doesn’t). Call and leave voicemail messages so he’ll feel less lonely. Buy a big bone from a grocery store so they’ll be occupied, etc.
