Dogs Toilet Training Made Easy

The key to successful toilet training is consistency. If you follow a few simple steps your puppy will be going outside to do his business rather than inside on your floor.

When Loretta came to live with us I had no experience of toilet training a puppy and the first few days where hard work, and a lot of puddles had to be clean up, but once I had a system in place it became very easy. I know this will sound sad but I got a pad and wrote down the times that she went to the loo and a pattern started to emerge.

Yes I did what all the books said and made sure she went out at the key times of the day but if you also make notes of the other times your puppy goes accidents stopped happening.

So the key times of day are:-

When your puppy wakes up after a sleep
After a meal
After a play session
First thing in the morning
Last thing at night
If you see your puppy sniffing or circling

Remember never go longer than two hours without allowing your lab puppy access to the garden.

So your puppy has had a sleep so what’s the next step in your Dogs toilet training.

Take your lab puppy into area of the garden you have chosen for your puppy to relieve himself. Then you need to give him a command. I always used “busy”, but you can use any command you want to, but remember you have to be happy with the word you are using because the neighbours might overhear you.

When your puppy has done his business use the command and your puppy will learn to associate the command with the action.

Then you need to give your puppy lots of praise, (I always gave Loretta a treat just one piece of her dog food) your puppy will then understand that he has responded correctly.

Have a short game with your puppy before you take him back into the house. If you go straight back into the house your puppy might adopt delaying tactics so he can stay outside longer.

No matter how vigilant you are accidents will happen. Please remember it is not your puppies fault that he has had an accident but it’s yours. 9 out of 10 times when an accident happens it will be because you failed to see the warning signs.

When you first get your Labrador puppy there will be accidents and you will feel frustrated, tired and you will get angry. But please do not take it out on your puppy. Yes I know what it’s like for the first 3 days you seem to be constantly cleaning up mess. You will get to the stage when you you want to yell at your lab puppy, but don’t.

Unless you catch your puppy red-handed, he will have no idea why you are so displeased. The old-fashioned idea of rubbing his nose in the mess doesn’t work, all you will do is confuse your puppy and you will be the one who has to clean him up as well as the floor.

If you do catch your puppy in the act or spot him circling and sniffing don’t yell at him. Just calmly take him outside to his toilet area as quickly as possible and give him the verbal command.

When your lab puppy responds give him lots of praise and a treat and you will find that the accidents will become few and far between.
