smrjdpkids asked:

My aunt is elderly and a person who rented from her took off and left his dog behind and she had puppies and we were thinking of trying to donate them for the seeing eye project they are cute puppies, they are a lab mix and we need to find them homes. My aunt can not longer take care of them. We were thinking about maybe giving them to the dearch and rescue for training, or service dogs. but can not find any way of contacting them.

Service dogs are picked not donated. The dog has to have a certain something that the trainers are looking for (devotion to human service, intelligence) that sort of thing. Put up ads anywhere and everywhere advertising the puppy’s. Work with the puppies and get them as trained as possible when they’re old enough. Remember to screen the people who want the pups, the puppies would be better off put down than end up in the hands of the wrong people. Good luck, hope you find homes for them.

Contact your local 4H club. They often train dogs for the blind. Good luck. Thats a nice thing to do.

Do you know of any place that does physical therapy in your area? If you do go in and ask them if they know of anyone or anywhere that you could send them. That might be your best bet. I know that my neighbor who is a physical therapist knows a couple of places because they work with some people who need the dogs. The local hospital also has a therapy ward you might be able to check there, I don’t know that they will know anything though. Just be sure to explain the situation and I am sure that they will be more than willing to help you out. Good Luck!

These folks don’t just take any dogs. For seeing eye dogs, they either breed them themselves or they work with specific breeders. A few therapy dog groups use shelter dogs, but they pick the dogs from shelters based on specific working characteristics they are looking for . Just any puppy, cute or not, won’t do.

Your best bet is to find a good shelter or rescue group to take them. Cute lab puppies will get adopted in no time flat.

That’s really nice that your are trying to care for the pups. Most guide dog programs breed their own dogs because the temperament needed is not easy to find. Other groups use only adult dogs because they can be evaluated then and not have to wait a year or so.

Try Googling guide dogs and see what pops up. When I did it, I got almost 2 million hits.

Did you call the police? Abandoning dogs is a crime. If you get the police interested, perhaps they will take a pup or two.

It’s a great idea and good that you didn’t just dump the female at a shelter, but with crossbreeds and them being young pups it might not be possible. Not for Guide dogs anyway! In the UK the Guide Dogs for the Blind don’t train puppies! They breed their own as they like to know the temperament and working ability of both parents. Pups are then put with families and given socialisation and basic training and don’t go to the centres for formal training till 12 months old! Most other groups also use young adults as it’s impossible to assess the dogs for suitability till then.
You might be better to find a Dogs for Disabled group who will be willing to train pups. Go on the web and search under service dogs! therapy dogs, etc!!!! Even try the Police! I’m not sure at what age they start training drug and explosives dogs but they may be willing to help and might even be able to use them!
