lab puppy training secrets
Michelle asked:

He literally is just like Marley in the movie Marley and me, he is a little rough, he likes to bite, and i have a 1 month old and he will jump onto the bed, or into her swing and lick her face and nip a little and she fusses but he doesnt know he’s hurting her.

we would like to get him to stop biting, i know they need to but how to teach them to not bite humans.

we want some potty training tips, and some kennel training tips please.

also, he is a male, so I heard they love to be praised with treats, so how should we train him to sit, and stay.

We want to put him in petsmarts puppy classes but arent sure how exactly he would do in there, he’s pretty hyper for a puppy haha.

thanks!

They are pretty hard headed but all I can say is make sure that you stay on them over and over and over. Once you have them trained they are great pooches.

get him to a training class. I own a black lab, but i got him when he was a year old, and he was perfect, and he still is he knows more than 34 commands!!! As for biting you have to discipline him. tell him no and put him in his crate or in an enclosed area away from you and the baby. Your dog needs to learn who is boss and thats you!!! Good luck

And take him to puppy classes he will get socialized and he will get taught basic commands

Petsmart should have obedience classes or some sort of dog trainer at their location that can teach you how to train your dog. Since he loves treats, encourage good behavior with the treats, and discipline his unecessary actions (such as biting, jumpin, licking) with a firm “NO”. Any dog that finds this kind of behavior acceptable will get the sense that he is the Alpha dog, leader of the pack, and he will act in a manner that shows that he is the leader. This is very bad, since the dog does not know his place. The good news is that since he’s still a puppy, he can be trained just in time before he gets too big.

A good way to get your dog to stop biting is to, like I mentioned before, discipline him when he acts this way. Give him plenty of chew toys to limit the need to bite anything or anyone. Training him to be obedient and calm should be done the same way as teaching him simple commands, like sit and stay. Treats are a good way to train him, especially since he enjoys being rewarded.

Also, a dog’s excitement is not necessarily a good thing. This means that they are unstable and need to burn off energy, rather than them just being happy to see you. Your dog will need to be walked at least twice a day in order to be stable. I have a hyperactive Miniature Dachshund that I’m trying to maintain, by the way, so I know how that gets haha.

Having him in puppy classes is an excellent idea. This way, he’ll get used to other dogs and this will reduce paranoia whenever he comes in contact with them later. Paranoia in dogs results in growling, barking, biting, and fighting, which you obviously don’t want. I strongly suggest the classes. Go to this link below to see the proper instructions on handling your dog on the day-to-day basis and multiple activities.

tips umm. okay i got theese from a book, this one is how to get your puppy to pay attention so here

watch me
its important to teach your puppy to pay attention to you. if you dont have your puppys attention, you cant teach him/her anything.
__when your puppy is looking away, say “puppys name, watch me”
__when your puppy looks at you (even a quick glance), mark the behavior, then reward her/him with a treat or praise.
__gradually increase the time you expect your puppy to watch you by withholding the treat for several seconds.
__practice every time you want to get your puppy’s attention

Most Labradors are hyper :) That’s just their nature . If you want to train him i think they do better with the owner if you have the patience ( you need lots ) ! to stop the biting you need to get him lots of squeaky toys and stuff to chew on that he can’t tear through in one day ( which is hard to find because they tear through just about anything) . I would recomend the tug of war ropes and the big bones like the raw hide ones , they have to be small enough for him to carry but big enough to last him a long time . As for potty training take him outside every hour or so and make sure you let him sniff around for awhile to do both *** and poo. Males like to find new spots that they haven’t marked yet to go and they sniff forever!! Beware they like to mark the funiture inside your house too. It would be better if you train him to be an outside dog (if you have a fenced in yard) because Labs usually don’t like to be pinned up inside all day long, they will go crazy!! It’s also easier to potty train them if they stay outside most of the time :) And finally to train him to do tricks you simply show him the treat ( Milkbones for large breeds are great for them and they love them) and say “sit” , “stay” , “come” , “shake” or anything you want him to do , then show him what it means. For instance if you want him to sit you say “sit” and put your hand on his lower back by his tail and give him a little nudge (NOT A PUSH OR SHOVE ) just enough to get him to sit, then when he does tell him good boy and give him half of the treat. If you want to teach “shake or “paw” the make him sit first then say ” shake” and grab his paw and shake it , as if you were shaking another persons hand and then tell him good boy and give him half of the treat . You should only try one trick at a time starting with sit being the first trick then stay and whatever else you want after that but not all in one day :) Remember it takes time for them to learn but Labs learn really fast :) You will always want to tell your dog to sit before doing anything that way they are respctfull and obediant to you and others:)

I Hope This Helps You :)

Good Luck !
