Puppy Night Training if you get this right from the start your life will be so much easier

The first thing you need to do is decide where your puppy is going to sleep. The best option for your puppy night training is to have a Lab Puppy crate Or Lab Puppy Cage.

Why?

If your new lab puppy is in his crate or cage he will feel secure and when you get up in the morning you know he has not been able to get into any mischief.

So once this has been decided choose a designated area for your puppy to sleep.

Most new puppy owners choose the kitchen, but the choice is yours.

Puppy night training is all about routine so from the first night with your new puppy follow these basic rules.

• Feed your puppy it’s last meal of the day between 8-9pm. A young puppy has a small stomach, and if he has to wait to long for his breakfast, he will let you know, and you will not get a good nights sleep.
• In the summer it gets light very early, so you will need to block out the light. The way I did this was to put an old duvet cover over the cage. If it’s light puppy will think it’s morning and will want everyone to get out of bed even though it’s 4 in the morning. I know Labrador puppies are bright but they can’t read the time.
• When it’s bedtime, take your puppy outside to his toilet area and wait until he has relieved himself, have a quick game in the hope of tiring him out. ( Dogs toilet training tips go here)
• Settle your puppy into his sleeping quarters and give your Lab Puppy a treat.
• Give your puppy a toy to play with make sure the toy is 100% safe so he cant come to any harm.
• If you are not using a lab puppy crate or cage just have a quick look round the room to make sure there are no potential hazards.
• Shut the door of the room and leave your puppy. Go to bed, and use ear plugs if necessary!

Your new puppy will protest, but please resist the temptation to go down stairs to calm him. Your puppy will learn very quickly that if he makes a noise you will come and see him, don’t do it. The first couple of nights will be hard but if you harden your heart to your new puppies cries, he will eventually settle down. What would you prefer a few nights of your puppy barking, or every night having to get up it’s your choice.

The first night with new puppy will be the hardest, you will lie there feeling guilty, thinking “that poor puppy is all alone down stairs I should go and check him”. Will you still be thinking that after a whole week without sleep you have been warned.

After a couple of nights your Labrador puppy will get into the hang of his bed time routine. He will accept that he is left alone when it’s dark, but you will there in the morning to give him a big hug and a yummy breakfast.
