I have a new 10 week old black lab puppy and he keeps biting everyone! Any training tips?
Chris asked:
My puppy is 10 weeks old and a black lab. He keeps biting everyone really hard. Not like regular puppy biting, real, aggressive biting. I understand that he is a puppy, and i wanted to know if anyone has any training suggestions. Thanks!
I hope this video helps How to train your puppy to stop biting

10 weeks and biting? That’s not aggression, that’s how a puppy plays, rough. Call Petsmart and find out the age to start a training class. In the meantime pick up a book about natural puppy behavior.
I’m in the midst of reading the latest from the Dog Whisperer, and he advises that ‘energy’ can make a world of difference.
For me specifically, when our pup pug was nipping, we’d say, ‘No biting…’ like a warning and he’d let go. Then we’d say ‘Good boy.’
I don’t know how many disagreements I’ll get from this next comment, but it also helped that when he bit us, we simply just lightly blew into his face which kind of shocked him, and made him stop biting.
That is not aggression that is what puppies do. Next time your pup bites you say NO and then give them something they are allowed to chew on and praise them.
Chew toys. Lots of chewy chew toys. Whenever she bites at you, stuff one in her mouth. Keep one with her at all times. She probably loves it, teething hurts and chewing is just so darn fun. My boss had a chewing puppy, so she bought her a playmate, and the puppi had this same problem with my beagle pup – they are a highly social dog and need lots of running and playtime…but on to your biting issue…Jonah (my beagle) did the same thing – I asked a friend who breeds and trains them and he said to try a few things….here they are
when puppy bites you, tap him on the nose while saying no (not yelling it but saying it firmly) and give him a chew toy instead, while saying “No, you dont chew on mommy (or daddy or whomever) – you chew on your toys!” (this is what worked best for me)
you can also get apple bitters – its a spray that tastes horrible and works pretty good, depending on the dogs attitude, to break them from biting and chewing things they werent supposed to.
instead of pulling away when puppy bites you, push into the bite, not to hurt puppy but to show him that you arent afraid and that it makes no difference if he chews your or not – its not going to get you to play.
ignore the dog completely – once you establish that you are the one in control of the situation it might correct itselfes just chew on each other.
Hope i helped, BREE xoxo
At 10 weeks of age it would be very unusual for a puppy to be behaving aggressively. It sounds as though he’s just indulging in the very common puppy habit of biting and mouthing!
Although this is normal puppy behavior, it’s annoying and surprisingly painful, and something you definitely need to stop.
If you’re consistent in your corrections, he will ease up on the nipping, and eventually grow out of it but for now you need to let him know that this is not acceptable.
It’s not aggressive behavior, but it can be sometimes be considered an play for dominance, and it’s designed to get your attention. So, the first thing to do is to withdraw your attention from him as soon as he starts biting.
Tell him “Ouch, NO!” loudly and firmly. Then cross your arms, avoid eye contact, turn your back on him if you can, and ignore him for a few moments. If he keeps nipping at you, cross your arms (so your dangling arms and hands don’t tempt him!) and walk away.
Repeat this every single time he starts biting. Puppies learn through association, and once he begins to associate biting with losing your attention, he’ll stop doing it over time.
If, after a week or so, this isn’t working, or your puppy starts to slip back into his old habits, try spraying your hands, arms, pant cuffs, shoe laces etc. with Bitter Apple. Most puppies **** the taste and will stop mouthing.
For persistent stubborn biters who still won’t ‘cease and desist’, you can use a small spray bottle with water, or a breath freshener spray to stop him in his tracks. Learn how to do this, and get lots more information, tips and advice on dealing with puppy biting at the url below.
put him on his back and keep him there until he stays calm .you are showing him your the boss.
