playful puppy biting

silvrbreeze asked:

My husband and I brought our 8 week old white German shepherd puppy home from the breeder three days ago. Our puppy is incredibly calm and well behaved, almost to the point where we’ve tried everything we can to get her to frolic around in the house as she will for brief periods outside. She usually wont walk on any of the wood floors in our home, confining herself to our bedroom or guest bedroom for hours at a time no matter how much time we spend with her or coax her out. She seems to only feel comfortable playing there. We really want our puppy to break out of her shell, as she seems shy sometimes, but when we finally do get her riled up and playful for a few minutes, she bites playfully at our hands, feet, knees, etc when she is excited. I run with her outside to try and provoke play, and this usually ends in playful nips at my ankles and small jumps at my legs. She is so cute and sweet, but she really hurts us. How can I help my puppy learn to play and to stop biting us?
I really want to allow her to grow into the best dog she can be, and so I’ve been reading all the books I can get my hands on about puppies, their behavior, and what I can do to help her learn. I may be over analyzing her because of all this – who knows. I definitely do not want to use some of the harsher techniques described here, although I appreciate the help, she seems to be at a rough stage and I don’t want to frighten her since she trusts me. Something I have NOT mentioned is that the vet said she has tonsillitis, and although I winced at the news, he informed me tonsillitis in puppies is not a virus as in humans, but usually just inflammation caused by puppies shoving things too far back in their mouths. She also received more shots yesterday, along with a rabies shot, and all this is making her feel like poo. I don’t think there is something WRONG with her really, as we got her from a breeder who did everything good breeders are supposed to do, and she seems pretty normal.

I hope this puppy biting video helps

She is teething but our vet said to lay the pup on her back holding her head in both hands and sternly say no no biting no repeat everytime she bites you also have to look right into her eyes when u say it

Chew toys. Lots of chewy chew toys. Whenever she bites at you, stuff one in her mouth. Keep one with her at all times. She probably loves it, teething hurts and chewing is just so darn fun. My boss had a chewing puppy, so she bought her a playmate, and the puppies just chew on each other.

I know this sounds funny, but when the puppy “play-bites” if you can make a barking sound like a dog, do it & watch how quickly the pup will cease biting!! I have breeding dogs for over 35 yrs & just recently picked up this trick & it works!!!

we got a puppie a while back..And she would bite playing.. we just kept telling he no everytime and she learned..She would also sleep in our bathroom and no where else..You just have to give her time she will come out of her shell..Then she will want to play all the time…

If you make a load word when she does she will get scared and stop keep doing that tell she learns… also you could go to a pet place and get bitter apple lottion this taste so bad that will stop as well… also you have to understand that she is a puppy and puppys do go through bitting stages if there is somebody that you know that has a older dog ask if u can bring you pup over to play the older dog will snap at her tell her that she is bitting to hard… this is a VERY GOOD THING. puppys have the bitting problem becuase they leave the nest to early and havent had the fights and snips so any extra time you can get with her that involves another older dog will be good

This question answers part of your previous question. Your pup does not like walking on slippery wood floors which is why she is confining herself to the two rooms.

As for the biting, whenever she starts puppy biting, get up, walk away and ignore her completely for 15 minutes or so. This is what adult dogs do with rambunctious puppies. Puppy biting is normal and she will outgrow it, but this technique will help her figure out quickly that biting stops a play session instantly and the fun has come to an end.

When your puppy gets playful & starts to bite put your hand in the shape of a mitten & with the webbing in between your thumb & pointer finger & shove it to the back of the mouth & press back & tell it
” no bite”.

To get her to stop, every time she goes to bite, make sure you have a dog toy in hand and put that in her mouth instead.

*****Elaine F’s advice here is dangerous. The LAST thing you’d want to be doing to this dog is scaring the crap out of her by flipping her. Please, do not do this!*****

Your description of your dog sounds like something is not right. Have you seen a behaviorist about her yet? It’s great that you guys are engaging her and trying to get her to play and you sound like very good observers – noticing that she will only play in certain areas is one key to figuring out what’s happening with her.
I strongly suggest a behaviorist visit as soon as you can:

Shyness and reluctance to explore and play can lead to major problems. Please try to figure this out – this will affect her socialization negatively, and you REALLY don’t want to deal with that.
May I also suggest that you join Start Puppy Training – a free, moderated group on Yahoo. There are great trainers posting on that list and you will get better answers to your questions there.
