How to Stop a Dog from Biting Training – Part 2 of 4
This article is the second of a four-part article training series dealing with considerations to stop your dog from biting.
In this article we are going to review whether we should employ physical punishments for dog biting as well as some behaviors you cannot allow, if you want your dog training to be successful. We will also review why your families training needs to be consistent across the board to achieve better success.
Physically punishing your pets typically has a negative impact on your trainings. Usually, the physical punishments bring about a sense of fear of the trainer. Trust, rather than fear, is what primary feeling the pet should have for their trainer to experience best training results.
Verbal tactics work extremely well. Dogs are the acclaimed best friend of man, simply because they love our attention and do whatever they can to satisfy us. Use that to your advantage when training your dog to stop biting. Simply verbalize, or ignore, your puppy, and they will learn what is helping them achieve their desired goals, which is to have fun with you.
Do not play tug of war, or have your dog clamp onto the end of a rope, while you pick him or her into the air. Do not allow the puppy to bit or nip at your fingers. We do not want to convey a message that this behavior is acceptable, when in fact, it is not. Also, do not become engaged in wrestling behaviors, etc. Yes, we want to have fun with our dogs and we think we are making them happy. While it may indeed make the dogs happy, it is also instilling the wrong thought patterns.
In summary, please do not use physical punishments to correct your pet. Redirection, as with our own children, is usually the easiest and best way to accomplish a lot of your training goals. Avoid rough games that cause your dog aggression.
