Teaching a puppy not to bite can be a challenge. While puppy biting and nipping starts out as a bit of fun, it needs to be stopped as soon as possible to avoid problems later on when the puppy becomes an adult.

Why do puppies bite?

Young puppies that bite are going through a perfectly natural phase of puppy hood, especially when the puppy is in the teething stage. During this time a teething puppy will more bite and nip on just about anything the she can get her mouth on. Also, biting is a form of social play.

If the puppy was with the rest of the litter, this is how she would be playing with the other puppies. If one of the littermates gets out of hand, the other puppies will let the puppy know.

Because the puppy has no littermates, she will play with you the only way it knows how. It is up to you to show her that this type of behavior is not acceptable.
