Puppy Training Plans to Keep Your Sanity

When you are a new dog owner, one of your top priorities is to implement some good, sturdy puppy training plans that have seen the test of time. Leaving your puppy’s training to chance or listening to bad advice will lead you down a path you do not want to travel.

I feel the frustration new dog owners experience when they first get a puppy and don’t know where to start. They will typically get all sort of misinformation which inevitably leads to more problems rather than solve them. But my heart really goes out to all those puppies out there who are handled the wrong way and get to pay the price.

Puppy Training Books

Armed with some professional puppy training books and with my P.A.C.T, you will cover the basics of puppy training in seven days, I promise. More to the point, you will understand exactly what works, what does not, and why. Only then can you pass your own knowledge to your puppy.

In order to achieve that, you must first be clear in your own mind which commands you want to start with, the ones that your pup is the most likely to learn quickly. But the clincher is knowing exactly how to give those first commands so that your puppy obeys instantly and automatically.

The goal is to avoid frustration, not just for you but for your puppy as well. The faster your puppy can learn her first command, the more rewarding the experience for both of you. Make it fun, and you will have an eager pupil.

Effective Puppy Training Methods: Make a P.A.C.T.

Another of my Secrets with a capital S is one of the most effective puppy training methods ever. I call it my P.A.C.T. method, for Patience, Attention, Consistency, and Time. Without those four basic ingredients, you are doomed to failure. Think about it for a minute. Just like a child will model its parents’ behavior, a dog will model its trainer’s. Lose control and scream, and your dog will get excited and start barking.

Giving your dog your focused attention for a short period of time each day will have the same calming and grounding effect on your dog as on a child. The simple fact that you give them your undivided attention, that you hear them out and communicate with them will reassure them and help them gain confidence. As a whole new level of trust develops, obedience training will get easier and smoother.

Inconsistent commands will result in a very puzzled dog. There is a limit to the number of words dogs can assimilate. The shorter the command, the easier it is for them to recognize its meaning. Your dog will get the message loud and clear if you make sure that you always use the same succinct expressions.

And the more you work with your dog, the faster you will see a bond forming between the two of you. Just remember to keep the sessions short and make it fun for her. If you stop the practice when she loses interest, she will forever look forward to working with you. And remember, nothing can beat sound puppy training plans based on expert puppy training books. Make it easy on yourself and your puppy. Learn from a pro so you can teach like a pro!
