Austin asked:

I live in an apartment building, and in the building across from mine, there is always a yappy dog barking the backyard. Today it was barking for more than 3 hours straight early in the morning. I do not know anyone in the other building, but I can hear the dog clearly through my window. Are there devices that emit a high-frequency sound and makes dogs be quiet? My neighbor across the floor also has a dog who barks whenever the neighbor leaves. Hopefully this solution can deal with both.

Yes there are devices that emit a high frequency sound. Ypu can buy them from Amazon or your local pet store.

djembe asked:

I have a 4 year old Maltese he never had a problem barking at our old house. Since we have moved there is a dog over the fence that barks and so my dog barks back constantly and paws at the fence. I have to physically prise him away from the fence when I go out to tell him off otherwise he does not listen to me. I would like to teach my dog not to bark even if the other dog does.

I hope this video helps

If you have a dog, it’s likely that he knows a lot more about you than you know about him. He has been closely monitoring your daily habits.

If you disagree, please tell me how he knows that you are about to go out as soon as you grab your car keys and wallet.

Dogs can easily detect your emotions. They know when you are sad, cranky, or ready to play with them. They also learn the time and place for family meals and when it’s just about bed time.

In return for all of this, how much have you bothered to learn about your dog? Most likely not one-tenth as much as he has taught himself about you. Yet it is really quite easy to learn once you put your mind to it.

Dogs’ barking serves many different purposes. A bark can be used to repel others and another to attract. Some barking styles mean “get outta here!” while others might mean “Hey, I’m over here. Where the heck are you?”. All but the most inexperienced dog watchers will notice that dogs have a number of different types of barking ranging from a muted woof of appreciation, to the high-pitched yelp of alarm, to the loud string of angry barks that mean he’s prepared to fight.

Sir John Lubbock, a 19th century British behavioral scientist, noted that when a dog barks it is an attempt to mimic the sound of the human voice. He pointed out that wild dogs may howl but they do not bark. The same can be said about coyotes, wolves, and other members of the canine family that have not heard humans speak or the barking of a domestic dog.

The intent of a bark is completely different from that of a growl. When barking, a dog flings his head high, leaving his throat exposed and unprotected. Barking is definitely not a war cry. But when he growls he lowers his head so as to protect the vulnerable throat area, preparing for an impending fight.

So… when you’re walking up the path to a house and the family dog comes racing out barking loudly, you are most likely in no danger. However, if he advances toward you growling, with his head lowered and his tail rigid, then look out – there’s trouble brewing!

Very few barking dogs will actually bite if you just stand absolutely still with your hands on your chest and avoid eye contact. However, if you make wild gestures or if you turn and run, you’ll be in danger of an aggressive dog’s bite. Disregarding a strange dog’s growl is very risky business for anyone who values his skin.

David L asked:

My neighbors dog barks a lot and it is often times when no one (save the dog) is home.

This is really getting on our nerves considering we have very little free time to relax and when we are trying to relax (or even sleep!) this dang dog just keeps barking!

Any type of ways to deal with this?

Try buying a sonic bark stopper. You Plug it into the wall and when the dog barks it give out a signal that only the dog will hear and it should stop it barking.

Bark Control to Dogs

There are some dogs that rarely make a sound, and then there are dogs that keep on barking loudly every time. Don’t get it wrong; having dogs bark is far from irritating. It only becomes a pain to listen when they bark and continue to do so for no apparent reason. Though the first solution that comes to mind is to purchase a bark control device, one must understand that telling them to shut up will not be effective on its own. It is important to couple these devices with the appropriate training.

Having to train a dog to stop barking without any device is pretty challenging. Oftentimes it is an untrained dog that makes the loudest noise. If your dog is still untrained, you better start with simple commands like sit and stay. Rewarding them for every successful command is necessary. This will let the dogs focus their attention to you as they await your command. Another way to reduce their barking is to engage them in other activities such as playing or running. The less idle they become, the lesser the barking they will make. If the barking still continues, then that is the time to get bark control equipment.

Ultrasonic Bark Control

First, let’s focus on ultrasound devices. These devices stop a dog’s barking using a high-pitched sound only he could hear: ultrasound frequency. An example is the ultrasonic remote trainer. This is ideal for dogs whose barking is uncontrollable but can also work with normal ones during training.

There are two buttons: one giving a positive sound while another giving a negative sound. It has a 30-feet range and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

If a dog keeps on barking on a particular spot outside your house, it will not just be you who will have problems but your neighbors as well. In such a case, you can use an outside bark control device. Aside from having an ultrasound player, it also has an audio sensor (focused primarily on dog barks). When the dog makes his first bark, the sensor detects and automatically turns the ultrasound on. This would keep the dog from barking again, thinking that it caused the disrupting high-pitched sound. The sensors can detect a bark and plays the corresponding ultrasonic tone up to 50 feet.

When inside the house, you can use the similar indoor bark control device. It has similar features as the one you would use outside, but it detects and makes ultrasound with a range of 30 feet, since the place is smaller. This is ideal for kitchens or living rooms where the pets usually stay. It also has a manual switch for the ultrasound if you wish to get the attention of your dog whose behavior has become too rowdy.

Static Correction

For extreme cases, you can fit a special bark control collar to a noisy dog. The device often has the same sensor, but it activates a mild static correction instead of ultrasound. It does the same thing without using too much power. Note that the device is still very safe to use for dogs and will only give temporary discomfort.
