Since you have decided to get a Labrador as an additional member of the family, the next thing you must consider is the Labrador training. Labrador training specifically aims to teach your Labrador to perform certain actions or behaviors acceptable by his human pack. You definitely don’t want your dog messing your bedroom, do you? That being said, the responsibility of having a trained Labrador falls on you and your family as well, being the owner.
As a dog owner, you are probably aware that there are a lot of things you can do to achieve your goal of having a well trained Lab. You can hire a professional trainer or send your dog to a training school if you like. But sometimes, professional trainers and training schools cost more than what you allocated for Labrador training. This scenario gives you no other option but to train your dog yourself. Of course Labrador training at home is not a problem provided you are prepared for it. You must know what leash is appropriate for your dog, what training method works best and what diet is most appropriate.
Usually taken for granted, proper diet is one of the most important things to consider during Labrador training. Today, commercially prepared dog foods are preferred by most owners because of convenience. Commercially prepared dog foods come in various types, brands and packaging, that often times create confusions as to what is the best choice. Some claim that dry is the best and others prefer canned foods for Fido. Others would not feed commercial foods at all and would rather settle for homemade dog foods.
Whatever type of dog food you choose, be it homemade or commercially prepared, you have to make sure that it contains the right combination of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. These provide sufficient calories to meet your dog’s daily needs for growth, activity and even repair. Feeding the right diet will help your Lab learn what is taught to him during Labrador training.
Chicken, lamb, turkey or venison-based foods are good for dogs for they are easier to digest and won’t cause stomach problems. Beef should be avoided as much as possible because it is harder to digest and can cause gastrointestinal problems in some dogs.

Lab puppies can grow up to be such wonderful dogs, but there are a few things you need to know about Lab puppy training. You’ve made an excellent choice in breeds – Labs are smart, loyal, fun, and make a great best friend; now find out what you need to know about training him.
You have many things in your favor when it’s time to train your little guy. Lab puppies are not nearly as excitable as puppies of some of the other breeds and in my opinion that makes them much easier to train. Yes, young Labs need plenty of attention and exercise, but they have lots of calm moments when you can work on the training.
I think Labrador puppy training is not as hard because labs are smart and “get it” a lot sooner than some other dogs. This observation is based on my experience as an owner of different breeds and as a pet sitter. Potty training is easier and they pick up on simple commands like sit, stay, and come rather quickly. Plus, with a name like Labrador retriever, you can imagine how many games of fetch you will play in your dog’s lifetime.
Labrador puppy training needs to start early and be consistent. Depending on your own puppy, you can start him at around 4 to 6 months old. Remember his attention span is not real long at this age and he will tire easily. Keep the lessons short and stop before he gets off track.
Also keep in mind that you need to constantly reinforce what you’ve taught him by going over and over the commands. It’s amazing how quickly a dog can forget a simple command like “sit” if you let him. Just because you taught him that one first, don’t assume he’ll remember it if you don’t use it often.
Labs like their training because they enjoy having something to do and having something that challenges them. They also like to please you and it’s a wonderful bonding experience. You’re actually doing him a great favor by training him.
Keep in mind that Labrador puppy training is essential to keeping him safe and others around him safe. Lab pups are big and can be like loose cannons as they grow into their huge paws. If he’s not properly trained he can cause problems for others when he jumps on them, especially small children. You also want him to come when called to head off any potential problems – like running out into a busy street.

Puppy Aggression – What to do?
Puppy Aggression if your Lab Puppy has a sound temperament, aggression with other dogs is very unlikely to be deep-seated. Your puppy is more likely to be trying it on with others dogs as he is adjusting to his new maturity.

- The first thing you need to do is introduce your Lab puppy to an older dog who isn’t easily provoked. You need to start off with both dogs on their leads on (remember to keep the leash slake, tension on the lead will cause you puppy to become more hyped up).
- Have a toy and treats with you and distract your puppy make him will listen to you, and then let him go back to the other dog.
- Start walking the 2 dogs together, you will need to try and keep your lab puppies attention on you.
- You may need to repeat this exercise a couple of times, But when you think your dog is ready take the leads off and allow the 2 dogs to interact. If you follow these simple steps by the time your puppy has got over the excitement, hopefully he will play with the other dog without showing any aggression.
- If you are really worried about your puppy biting the other dog then you will have to consider putting a muzzle on him. This will make you far more relaxed when you are out with him, and you will become more confident that he will be unable to inflict any damage on another dog.
Top Tip: Do not avoid situations where you will meet other dogs. It is far better to let your puppy meet other dogs. Sign up for a local training class, so that your dog will meet other dogs in a controlled, working environment.

Training your Labrador Puppy Three Things To Remember
When Training your Labrador puppy there are 3 main things to remember,
- Have realistic expectations
- Being Consistent
- Praising your new lab puppy

So let’s start with realistic expectations, whatever problem you are having Training your Labrador puppy whether it’s your Dogs Toilet Training, leash training a puppy, puppy training biting etc.. it will take time.
Lab puppies are quick to learn but it will not happen overnight. Take your time, take it slow and steady. Let’s look at it another way, you have a child that is learning to take its first steps, it takes two steps and falls over, would you be thinking to yourself, that child’s not a walker, no you wait and watch and over the coming weeks that child starts to walk more and more steps. You need to be patient and you will be rewarded with a well behaved Lab Puppy.
The next thing to remember is you must be Consistent. Consistency is what you are aiming for. If you use certain commands for certain tasks that you want your puppy to perform Training your Labrador puppy will become so much easier. If you are doing puppy training recall always say the same thing “Ben (your puppies name) Come”
Make sure you feed your puppy the same time every day, Lab puppy training is all about routine and consistency. Take your new lab puppy out to the same place to relieve himself, put him in his lab puppy crate the same way every night. While he is still very young try nominate 1 person to do the training it will make your life easier. Also if you don’t want puppy sleeping on your furniture, make sure you always tell him to get off, if you let him sleep on there once because he looks so sweet, it will be a hard habit to break. Start as you mean to go on.
The last point is praising your new lab puppy. The more you praise him for doing well the better response you will get. If he has weed on the floor for the 3 time in a day just ignore it, but if he goes outside and relives himself praise him give him a treat, have a game with him he will soon get the message. A puppy just wants to please you; he wants your attention, so remember to praise him. Too much is never too much, the more you praise his good behavior the more good behavior you are going to see.
