lab puppy training secrets
buff asked:

We have a 5-month-old black lab who has been very easy to train (sit, stay, down, come) and heel on the leash. We like to take her into the woods, where we can let her off the leash to run with our older dog. However, as soon as she sees other people or dogs, even a quarter-mile away, she sprints toward them, and there’s nothing we’ve tried that will even slow her down. Most people and dogs are happy to see her and she’s very friendly with them, but we anticipate problems with aggressive dogs and/or frightened children. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Andre T asked:

Well I just got a complaint today about my dogs barking and she threatened to call the cops. I’m sure my dogs wasn’t even barking excessively, but it’s just they start barking when we put them in the kennel and I was looking around but I can’t find any laws about dog nuisance. So can anyone help me out? Thanks guys!

Also, I live in Simpsonville, South Carolina.

You might not notice your dogs barking but people around you will. How long do your dogs bark and is it every day. How long do you keep them in the kennels keep a check to see how long they bark for.

If they are barking for a long time you will be fined and you could also have a court order to stop your dogs barking.

Talk to your neighbour and try and sort things before the authorites get involved.

Dog barking devices are tools to help quiet excess barking.  We all know that dogs bark, that’s just what dogs do.  Have you noticed that all that barking doesn’t seem to bother the dog at all?  That’s because it doesn’t.  Many dogs seem to really enjoy making a racket.  Too much of that noise, on the other hand, can drive humans right to the edge.  Here are some of the tools you can turn to.

Often a shock collar is the first thought when a bark control device is mentioned.  No doubt electronic anti bark collars work.  They usually do stop barking, and quickly.  But they usually only work as long as the collar is on and charged.  Most dogs can sense that the collar isn’t working and they certainly know when it’s removed.  Then the barking starts back.

Here’s the other problem with shock collars.  Many dogs go into panic mode when the shocking starts.  The shocks drive them crazy.  I can understand that, can’t you?  Also, many dogs become very nervous and unstable after a shock collar is used.  All in all, a shock collar seems like a bad idea.

Other collar options seem to work just as well or better.

For example, the ultrasonic collar generates a sound that’s unpleasant to the dog but inaudible to people whenever barking starts.  That seems fair… to fight noise with noise.  These seem to be about as effective as shock collars.

Then there is the citronella collar.  Dog barking triggers a sensor that squirts oil into the dog’s face.  That’s a bit shocking, but not harmful.  It’s not just the surprise that stops the barking either.  Citronella oil is stinky and unpleasant to sensitive noses.  That’s enough to make most barkers shut up to stop the stink.

It isn’t necessary to resort to electrical shocks to stop dog barking.  Often, just a change in how you deal with a pet can stop excess barking.  If not, one of the dog barking devices can be a useful tool to stop the noise.

When it comes to aggressiveness in a dog this can be a very serious problem. There are new laws in many areas that state dog’s owner can be charged and the dog put down if the dog bites someone. Of course with some serious dog training our dog can learn to enjoy people not turn on them.

There are many reasons why dogs are or become aggressive. Maybe the dog feels his territory is being compromised, or he feels threatened. A lot of aggression comes from lack of confidence and insecurity. Simple obedience will not solve your dog’s aggressive problems only some serious dog training will do the trick. Aggressiveness doesn’t just mean biting; it means barking and lunging at people as well. This type of behavior needs to be addressed as soon as possible to prevent anything serious from happening to someone or another dog.

Your vet can recommend you how to go about finding someone who can work with aggressive dogs. Training aggressive dogs is a specialty and unfortunately could cost you a fair amount of money, but the end result is well worth it and you don’t have to worry about losing your dog. Most obedience and training schools won’t take aggressive dogs as most of the places run classes with other members and won’t let them be endangered. The best thing you can do is to take him to a proper dog school. Look in your yellow pages for one.

Always check the techniques used by schools on how they train aggressive dogs as training an aggressive dog can be dangerous some places may use out of date methods which could be harmful to your dog, although this isn’t always the case it is always better to be safe than sorry. I wish I could say it was easy to train your dog not to be aggressive but it isn’t.

At the end of the day what counts is that your dog stops attacking and he starts loving. An aggressive dog can bridle the relationship that you have with him therefore you and your dog aren’t having the best time together as you are always worried about him biting you, other people or other dogs. I recommend that you do what it takes to get the problem handled!
