Problem With Your Puppy Barking or Growling

Does your puppy growl or bark when a stranger approaches your house or when something goes bump in the night? If so, you’re not alone. Most dogs will vocalize when they are exposed to new or different situations, including strange people or animals entering their territory; being separated from their pack, mother or even your family members; or new or alarming sounds. puppies  may also bark or growl when they see prey, such as squirrels, and they may bark for attention, food or if they are anxious.

puppies often growl when they are fearful or trying to assert themselves in a situation. If the dog’s fear or assertiveness is alleviated by growling or barking, the dog will learn that his behavior is acceptable and the behavior may become more frequent or severe.

Some medical problems may cause growling or barking and older pets experiencing senile changes may have barking problems. Intense and continuous barking may be considered compulsive. Check with your veterinarian to evaluate your pet’s barking or growling problem. Behavior training and drug therapy may be helpful in reducing barking for pets with medical, geriatric and compulsive disorders.

Socialize Your Puppy

Acclimate your puppy to a variety of different people, environments, situations and noises to help lessen anxiety as your puppy grows. Make sure your puppy spends time alone so that he doesn’t develop separation anxiety while you are away from him (see Dogs and Separation Anxiety). Proper training is essential to preventing behavior problems, such as growling and barking. Ask you veterinarian for more information about puppy training and see Training Your Puppy).

Correcting a Barking or Growling Problem

Correcting a barking or growling problem first requires that you have effective management of your dog. Once you have achieved this, you can begin to train your dog to lessen his barking or growling behavior by using rewards for quiet behavior. The reward should be something that the dog really likes such as a favorite treat, tummy rubs, or a favorite toy. Punishment is generally ineffective in correcting barking problems. Too much punishment may even exacerbate the behavior and cause the dog to be fearful or aggressive.

Begin your training with situations that you can easily control (such as a family member making a noise that causes the dog to bark) before moving on to difficult situations (such as a strange animal in your yard). When your dog barks at the stimuli (for instance, a doorbell ring), immediately interrupt the barking. When the dog is quiet offer the dog a reward for their behavior.

Several products are available that may interrupt barking. Devices activated by owners, such as water sprayers, cans with coins or pebbles and audible alarms. Citronella Spray Bark Collars as well as Bark Collars using a static correction, are usually effective in disrupting barking and getting a quiet response from the dog. It is important when first using these devices that you are there to praise and reward the dog when it becomes quiet. Without the reward there is no incentive to remain quiet.

Bark-activated products are also effective because they will immediately respond to barking. Off-collar, bark-activated alarms or water sprayers will train your dog to stop barking in specific areas. Bark-activated collars are useful when your dog doesn’t bark in single, specific areas (the collar will respond when your dog barks, no matter where he is located at the time). Audible and ultrasonic collars are sometimes effective in stopping barking, but they are rarely a completely reliable deterrent. Citronella-spraying collars are effective with most dogs. Electronic shock collar should never be used. Make sure to discuss these options with your veterinarian to find the one that will work best for your pet.

During training, barking must be interrupted right after it begins for the training to be effective. Repeat this process until the dog no longer barks or growls at the situation, person or sound.

Reward your dog when, at your request, he has stopped barking. Only reward the dog when he is quiet and gradually increase the amount of time that the dog needs to be quiet for him to receive a reward.

As the barking or growling problem decreases, make sure to direct your dog to more appropriate behavior, such as play, and the problem should lessen over time.

Aggressive puppy

Playing with your puppy can be fun, but there comes a point when your puppy is too aggressive. Some puppy’s hostile behavior can be genetic, but a good portion of it is how the puppy is handled.

Here are 4 tips to help keep your puppy from becoming too violent.

1) Do not manhandle the dog. This is hostile behavior on your part and only teaches the puppy that aggressive behavior is the only way to get what you want. The puppy will respond in kind when they want something.

2) When you do want your puppy to give you things, a ball or chew toy, teach them. By using command words you can train your dog to do a variety of things to include giving you whatever they have in their mouth. If you try and grab it or force it from the puppy, this reverts back to tip one. Training your puppy also encourages obedient behavior and establishes commands are to be obeyed, not negotiated.

3) Use your voice in a firm but non-angry manner when using command words. And when you touch the puppy it should always be in a positive manner; never strike or yell at the puppy for punishment. This instills fear not obedience. Fear can often lead to aggressive behavior later.

4) When your puppy acts inappropriately, reprimand with a firm “no” – but in a non-angry manner. Stand your ground if the puppy is misbehaving. If you over-react you are likely to create a puppy that feels they can win if they just push hard enough. Do not fight back, but be firm as to what your expectations are. Teach the puppy your commands are non-negotiable.

Dogs are pack animals and they naturally understand the concept of Alpha or leader. However, the Alpha of the pack does not have to be aggressive, nor is it the leader constantly questioning their ability. The best way to ensure you have an obedient dog is to train your puppy that you are the leader.

The best way to be the puppy’s leader is by being firm but not cruel with your expectations. Be fun, kind, playful and loving often with your puppy, but also make sure your puppy understands what you think is proper behavior. You will accept nothing else, not if the puppy wants you to play.

Secrets to Dog Training Review is it any good?

So this morning I have been reading through the entire material on the secrets to dog training website, and I have to say I am quite surprised at all the information and training you get for your money.

I sat down with a cup of coffee and started looking through the site. I then realised that 1 cup of coffee wasn’t going to be enough.

Secrets to Dog Training

Secrets to Dog Training

Firstly I went through the secrets to dog training manual and had good look through all the information.

The manual comprises of 261 pages, these are divided into 8 chapters and each chapter is dedicated to different aspects of your dog’s life. The eight chapters are :

  • what dog to choose,
  • caring for your puppy,
  • different types of dog training methods,
  • understanding your dog,
  • common dog behaviour problems (my favourite chapter),
  • dog commands, dog whispering explained and last but by no means least, health related dog problems.

Working through the sections the one that I found most interesting was common dog behaviour problems and how to deal with them. I really liked the case studies. One of the case studies that they went through was a puppy pulling on its leash. The advice that they gave was really interesting and I hadn’t seen it before. It was to use a technique called the random walking technique.

My friend has a basset called Sidney who is really bad on the lead, when I take him out, he takes me for a walk and not the other way round, by the time I get him home, my arm aches so much from the constant pulling .I have tried many techniques with him that haven’t worked so I  am looking forward to trying this method out. It’s a 10-15 minute training session that needs to be repeated over a couple of days, but I have high hopes that this technique will work.

I also like the dog training time table, it tells you what training your puppy or dog should be doing and sets out when and how log each training session should last. If you have never done any dog training before, this is a must. It’s all very well knowing what training should be done, but it can get very confusing knowing what to do first, also being told how long you should be training your puppy and dog for is really helpful. When you first start your puppy training it can be overwhelming, this time table will really help.

A secret to dog training is a very comprehensive course and it did cover a lot of puppy training problems in a clear and concise way.

One thing that I wished I had noticed when I logged in to my account were the bonus items. If I had looked at this first I would not have had to sit reading all through the info instead I could have listened to the whole Secrets to dog training course.

Each chapter has been put into audio format which you can download on to your computer and listen to whenever you want; you could even burn these tracks onto cd or upload it to your Mp3 player.

I have to admit I am much better at listening then sitting reading information off a computer screen. I find I have to stop every 15mins and I tend to skim text and just pick out bits of information and then find I have lost my place and find myself re-reading the same paragraph over and over again.

Listening to the chapters help the information sink in a lot quicker and I was free to right notes on parts of the training course that I found interesting and I could also get on with other things while listening to the dog training audio.

You could even download the section that you wanted to listen to and listen to it while you are out taking your Lab puppy for a walk.

When you first get your Lab puppy you always feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day, so if the thought of sitting down and reading a dog training manual just doesn’t seem likely, then listening to the dog training audio would be a good option.

My one criticism of Secrets to dog training course was, in some parts of the manual you would be referred to another section and it would have been really useful if you could click on a link and be taken to that part of the course instead of having to scroll through to find the right place.

Once you have signed up for the Secrets to dog training course you can even join the forum and ask questions and talk to other puppy and dog owners about the problems you are having, swap funny stories and experiences, they seemed like a friendly bunch of people.

So if you are looking for a dog training course where you will learn how to get your lab puppy to WANT to be a good dog, and you want a guide that teaches you to train your puppy by NOT hitting, scolding or abusing him then this is the right training course for you.

I hope my Secrets to dog training review has been helpful and not too long. If you have any questions about the course then leave a comment and I will get back to you about Secrets to dog training.
